League Comics and Marvel | /dev diary – League of Legends

Hey everyone, I’m Greg Street, Head of Creative Development
here at Riot. Today I’d like to share an update about the future of comics
heading into 2019. Over the last couple of years, we’ve released several comics such as Ryze: The Burning Lands and Varus: Retribution. We used these pieces to explore how best to tell stories in
the League Universe and now I want to talk a little bit about what we learned. First, we experimented with different art styles and have zeroed in on what we think are the right ones to
tell our stories. Second, through your feedback, we learned that you want
longer stories than what a single issue is able to contain. And then finally, we learned that it’s really difficult to
coordinate the release of a comic with the release of a League champion since so much can
change even up to the last minute. Going forward, we’re going to use comics less as a
promotional tool to hype new releases and more to fill out and expand upon the League universe. So with all of this in mind, we wanted to find a partner who really understood the comics business. We have a strong story foundations and we think we know how to tell them in a heroic way – but we aren’t experts in comics publishing and distribution. Hopefully you’ve already heard by now that we think we’ve found the perfect partner in Marvel. We see a lot of parallels between the Marvel universe and
the League universe, since both have a huge cast of characters, really strong themes, but a world with a lot of richness and
detail. We also aspire to be like Marvel looking back at hundreds of stories when we’re developing
new projects. So, what are you going to see? The first product of our partnership in Marvel is coming in
December. Ashe: Warmother. In it, Ashe is going to come to terms with her mother’s
expectations and set out on a quest that will end up changing Runeterra. You’ll learn more about Ashe’s origins, but we also want to move the timeline of Runeterra forward, so we want to develop series not just about what happened
before but also about what happens next. Our plan is to release new comics regularly throughout 2019
and leading into 2020, with a goal of having multiple series releasing each month. We have three series lined up already, and we can’t wait for them to come out of the shadows and
into the light. We’re also excited to be able to offer physical copies. While Riot is largely a digital company, we think there’s something awesome about being able to hold
a comic book in your hands. By the end of 2019, we want to start offering comics for
sale, just like any other Marvel comic, ideally at the same time
they’re available digitally. We’ll still release all of our comics for free on Universe six months after release just to make sure nobody misses
out. This really is just the beginning for comics. With Marvel as our partner, we see an exciting future for fans of both League of Legends and comic books, and we
can’t wait to hear what you guys think. We’ll be back soon with another update talking about what else Creative Development is working on
coming in early 2019. Thanks.

  1. Hello, my name is Pedro, I live in Brazil, and I wanted to know if the riot could create a champion based on the thanos character.

  2. Two strong partners going to work together, it must be dream.
Please publish Movies instead of comics! That also what Marvel excels at, comic series doesn't fit League imo

  3. 1) I have been waiting for this and talking about this since when i first started in season 3. Glad to see its finally happening. especially with a good company like Marvel. 2) Make a Stan Lee, Lee sin skin. It would be a great way to pay homage to Stan. For once allow him to be a great kicking/punching crime fighter.

  4. MY THING, IS HOW DOES THE STORY GET TO EACH REALM/CLAN/GROUPS OF PEOPLE FROM LEAGUE GET TO THE MOBA FIGHT? 5V5? AND WHO COMES FROM PAST AND WHO COMES FROM THE FUTURE? CLEAR NODS TO STAR CRAFT WITH VEL'KOZ PROTOS FOR SURE MIXED WITH ZERG MAYBE. ARE THE SKINS LIKE PART OF A MULTIVERSE? WOULD BE THE MOST LOGICAL CONCLUSION. MY GOD. IF YOU MAD THE SKINS REPRESENT DIFFERENT CHAMPS FROM THE MULTIVERSE. THAT LOOKS LIKE A FUN MOVIE.. BETTER GAME.. THEY NEED TO ADD, DIFFERENT LOCATIONS. LIKE THE NEXUS BE IN CENTRAL PARK AND THE ENEMY TEAM IN THE BRONX BY YANKEE STADIUM. ONE NEXUS AT THE PYRAMID THE OTHER IN INDIA. BE AWESOME.

  5. LoL has a good lore.. but i dont want LoL to look like Marvel. Marvel is a big company but I want LoL to keep its art.

  7. instead of working on a stupid comic book maybe you should work on getting people banned from rank who troll. listen to the community maybe

  8. 强是正能量,但我没有想做第一,现在或未来的电子游戏是有钱就是王道,我说一句废话我知道英雄联盟赚了很多钱。

  9. Listen, Phase 1 needs to be Noxian VS Demacian…Phase 2 a bit of RuneTerra History… Phase 3 maybe some Vandle City Vs Piltover and then Phase 4 Cross over…

  10. Hope that doesn't mean League sooner or later also belongs to disney… like everything allready! XD

Also not sure, i don't really like the art style you showed in this video, not my kind of comics i usually collect! ^^

  11. comics? WHAT ABOUT MOVIES!!! lol also y
you look tired you should get some rest (if anyone gets this reference)

  12. I have been playing league of legends since season 2. I watch mostly all your content. I subscribed for the first time in years because of the unification with Marvel. AWESOME! CONGRATS RIOT! GG! GLHF!

  13. "League universe" – League lore is SO bad, the fact you even try to call this a 'universe' feels totally delusional.

  14. I think marvel trying to make a marvel hero in league of legends and a league of legends trying to create a league of legends movie 😂😂 pls make a movie league of legends

  15. I see a lot of comments about how this man isn't getting any sleep. Don't worry, that's how a developer normally looks.
"That's my secret cap, always tired" x)
